Sokoto State is a transnational boundary State with Tahoua region as well Maradi region of the Republic of Niger to the North.

The city of Sokoto is the capital and also home to the Sultanate of Sokoto and Caliphate of Shehu Usman Dan Fodio which stretched from Republic of Cameroun, Republic of Niger, the Republic Burkina Faso and Swaths of Nothern Nigeria.

Sokoto State was created in 1976 from North-Western State.
