Nasarawa State (Nassarawa) was formed in 1996 from Plateau State. It was wholly part of Plateau between 1967 and 1996 and Benue-Plateau before the independence of Nigeria.

Lafia is the capital of Nasarawa State.

The natural border in the south of Nasarawa State is the River Benue with the boundary on either bank of the river Benue.

Nasarawa State borders FCT Abuja to the west and several satellite towns in Abuja municipality are on either side of the FCT Abuja-Nasarawa State border including New Karu LGA, Karshi LGA and Abaji serving as commuting towns.

Idoma, Tiv, Hausa and Fulani are languages spoken in Nasarawa State among others.
