Benue State is a transnational boundary State with the South-West region of the Republic of Cameroun to the south east, there the river Nkonom rises into the Plateau.

Idoma, Tor Tiv, Igala are languages spoken in Benue State among others.

Benue State is named after the River Benue (Tchadda River).

Benue State has many Urban and Sub-urban settlements on the bank of the River with Many tributaries of the river in Benue State such as the River Katsina-Ala.

Makurdi is the capital of Benue State since 1923. A river port town, it was a major trading post and commercial centre for subsidiaries of the Niger Company.

The City of Makurdi is divided North and South by the River Benue and a railway as well a road bridge spans the divide North and South of the River Benue in Makurdi.

Benue State was formerly Munshi State till 1918 when the name of the River Benue was adopted as Benue-Plateau State and consequently in 1976 Benue State.
