Kaduna State derives its name from the city of Kaduna and the River Kaduna. The Word Kaduna is a Hausa word meaning crocodile or alligator river from "Kaddani".

Kaduna State in its current attenuation was formed in 1987 before which it was a region in the North-Central State.

The history of settlements and civilisation stems from 500AD and encompasses Nok Culture, Jukun/Kwararafa Kingdom, Songhai Kingdom, Kanem-Bornu and the subsequent caliphate of Usman Dan Fodio.

The city of Zaria and the Emirate of Zazzau is one of the seven (7) Hausa States.

Kaduna river and settlements of Zungeru, aduna city were important outpost during the conquest and colonisation of the Nigeria.

Gbagyi, Gwari, Igala, Hausa, Kanuri and Nupe are languages spoken in Kaduna State.
