Kano State was created in 1967 from the Northern Region. Several Local areas in todays Kaduna State, Yobe State, Bauchi State, Katsina State and most Jigawa State where part of Kano State until 1996.

Kano State has been a centre for Islamic Hausa culture from the 800AD, ruled by various empires and Kingdoms including the Soghai Mali Empire, Kanem-Bornu Kingdom and the history of the walled city of Kano is contained in the "Chronicles of Kano".

The Emirate of Kano and Sultanate of Sokoto gained territory during the Islamic Caliphate of Usman Dan Fodio and the subsequent formation of the current system of rulership and leaders of the Kano Emirate and their counterparts in the 17th/18th century.

Hausa, Fulbe/Fufulde, Kanuri are languages spoken in Kano State.

The City of Kano was an important centre in the conquest of Nigeria and has remained a mainstay in the politics of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from the formation of the Northern-Protectorate of Nigeria till date.

Kano was one of the Seven(7) Hausa States.
