Bornu State in its current form, was created in 1976 form the North-East State and until 1991 contained much of Yobe State.Bornu State is a transnational boundary State with the Republic's of Niger and Cameroun to the North and the East and the Lake Chad Basin of the Republic of Chad toward the North-East.The North-East region was an important outpost during European colonisation with efforts at administering control from the governments of France, Germany and the subsequent Britain.Maiduguri/Yerwa was capital of the Northen-Eastern State in the Northern Protectorate from 1907 and is currently capital city of Bornu State.Bornu and the surrounding areas was center of the Bornu Kingdom which from earlier centuries AD and the Kanemi-Bornu empire from 1379-1890. The Caliphate of Usman Dan Fodio created the current lineage of rulers which are part of the much larger Hausa Emirates.
