Jigawa State was created in 1991 from Kano State. The City of Dutse is the capital and Jigawa State shares a border with Zinder region of the Republic of Niger.

Hausa, Fulani, Kanuri among others are languages spoken in Jigawa State. The State is one of the traditional Hausa State with the city of Hadejia an Islamic center for culture and learning during the Kanem-bornu empire and through the Caliphate of Usman Dan Fodio.

Jigawa State prides itself on its five(5) Emirates (Dutse, Gumel, Hadeji, Kazaure & Ringim) which serves as custodians of Kanuri culture.
