Kwara State was created in 1967 from the Northern region of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Initially is was North Western state before the name was changed to Kwara, A Yoruba/Hausa word for the Niger River.
Old Kwara State consisted of most of today's Abuja Municipality, Areas of Edo/Kogi/Niger states.
Kwara State was integral for the colonization of Nigeria and the conquest of Ilorin Emirate and the Nupe/Gwari Emirates was critical for the control of the Niger River Basin communities.
Yoruba, Nupe and Fulani are languages spoken in Kwara State among others.
Ilorin is the Capital of Kwara State.
Kabba and Jebba are economic centres with a hydroelectric dam situated in Jebba and the Kainji dam also in Kwara as well Niger State.
